Question fedora friendly graphics card suggestions please

hi everyone. i am having freezes on my fedora 21 running on an emachine model et-1831-05.it has integrated nvidia gforce 7050 grahics that ive been running the last coupla weeks since i got the box. lots of freezes so i want to go to ebay or somewhere and get another grahics card for it, hoping that will fix the problem. ive tried to install the linux drivers from the nvidia site but have had no luck.
so i would like to have some suggestions for inexpensive (50 or less)graphics cards that are known to be easy to setup in fedora. preferably vga/dvi. been using linux only bout a year now but now that ive seen the light, i refuse to trap myself behind those "WINDOWS" ever again.
thank you

Sounds like you're assuming that it's you nVidia-GPU that is freezing => might be wrong (nVidia closed-source & Intel open-source GPU drivers are usually excellent in Linux).
Any specific reason you're pointing your finger towards the nVidia GPU?
When does the freeze occur?
What do you exactly mean with "freeze"? => does it recover on itself or do you have to kill&restart Xorg or do you have to reboot the whole PC?

p.s.: doesn't matter a lot which distribution (Fedora, etc...) you're using.

i take it you did not read the instructions

replacing the already installed " Nouveau" driver ( installed BY DEFAULT )
wit h the nvidia.run
is NOT a few mouse clicks !!

it is a bit of WORK

and you really MUST fallow the install instructions

see the fedoraforum GUIDE
http://www.forums.fedoraforum.org/sh...d.php?t=280750

the use of the Nouveau driver is VERY WELL documented in the release notes and the fedora documentation
and so is installing the nividia driver USING the fedora nvidia repo
using the fedora rpmfusion repo and installing the pre built nvidia RPM is the RECOMMENDED way to install it

using the .run
will REQUIRE you to manually rebuild the boot image after the nouvean driver is blacklisted
and manually REINSTALL the .run for every update that involves the kernel and xorg / X11 and mesa

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

I would agree with Pearlseattle not to immediately assume that your onboard graphics is the source of the problem. There are a variety of things to look at here, let's start with these...

1. Memory. Try burning a copy of Memtest86+ and see if there are any bad modules.

2. Overheating and/or motherboard issues. Are the systems's fans working correctly? If you are comfortable opening the case, take a look at the motherboard and the heatsink/fan assembly. Is there any dirt buildup or bad capacitors? If the heatsink(s) are clogged up, take a can of air and spray it/them out. If you see any bad capacitors, there's your problem (or at least one of them) off the bat! You will need either a motherboard replacement or, if possible, the caps replaced, depending on the motherboard. The former can be pretty spendy. In most cases, it's cheaper to buy a new system unless you can replace it yourself.

3. Hard drive issues. Find out the manufacturer of your hard drive and download the utilities for that brand that scan the disk for any bad sectors or other issues. Hard drive failure is another possibility. If you don't know where to find the utilities, get the manufacturer's name and we can help you with that.

If getting this "technical" with your system is not for you, then you can always take your system to a local computer repair shop. Choose a firm that has experience with Linux.

In terms of a easy to install/use video card, I'm guessing Fedora comes with the latest Open Source Radeon drivers (for AMD Radeon cards.) Although for Ubuntu, I would imagine this list is pretty equal to what Fedora offers. There is also this list from Xorg which shows which features are supported in each class of chipsets. Get the best card that works for you. I noticed your system comes with a PCI-E x16 slot for video cards. You would need to find out if there is any particular version to this port, such as 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0 (or none at all,) and purchase your card accordingly.

Hope this helps.

1)
the easiest GPUs are the ones that are integrated in the Intel CPUs.
2)
Excluding your Linux box do you have any other PC? (doesn't matter what they run - Linux, Windows or MacOS)
If yes then you could use that to check what happens on your Linux box when everything freezes.

.
The model desktop came with a cpu that predates Intel building in gpu to the cpu by a bit.

the reason it is a bit complicated is
the DEFAULT installed nvidia driver is the opensource "Nouveau" driver

you are REPLACING that with a different one

you will have the SAME issues if you replace the opensource ATI/AMD driver with the CLOSED SOURCE one

fallow the instructions on the fedoraforum

you have to blacklist the nouveau
then install the kmod-nvidia.rpm ( or Akmod-nvidia.rpm) from rpmfusion repo

the Akmod-nvidia is recommended for LESS hassle

thank u all. i have noticed that the freeze mostly happens when i start my browser when i already have other programs running. if i start my browser with nothing else running, the freeze doesnt happen. which leads me torward thinking it may be memory related like was suggested, either a bad module or not enough/bad memory on the onboard grahics. i figured i could get a new graphics card for 30 to 50 that would have an install disk, hopefully with linux drivers as well.?
when it freezes the swirling curser just stops in place and thats it. no key combination ive tried or mouse clicking or moving does anything.
