fedora core 5 install problem
 

I have problem installing fedora core 5 i386-64bit on ASRock ConRoeXfire-eSATA2 motherboard, cpu is P4 3.20Ghz
This is a new installation on clean drives with no OS installed.

When fedora graphic comes up on hitting <enter> get following error.

isolink: diskerror 20, AX=4200 drive EF.


anyone come across this error before?

I have just done media check on a Fedora Core 4 disc and passed, when the dvd popped out, I run a media check on the fedora core 5 disc and the disc Failed. Appears to be a bad disc. I purchased it from pcdiscs.co.uk.

Anyone have a reliable source in UK where I can get a new disc?

Your vendor is in the list, so why not tell them the medium was bad and ask them for a new one. After all, these things happen, and they are certainly trustworthy.

Always do check media before installing!!!

Another advice, if you wish, is the following.

I had installed 64-bit Fedora Core 5 and I was annoyed by the many problems that go with 64 bit not being ready. I mean, Linux is ready, the kernel works fine, but many applications are not ready so you have:

- double packages, installing both the 32- and the 64-bit version
- problems with many browsers plug-ins.

I also did not manage to watch movies.

Probably people that are better at Linux than me manage to make 64-bit FC5 work for them. I decided to re-install FC5 for i386 (works fine for any P4 even those with EM64T). I am very happy: my PC is lighting fast, I do not detect any loss in performance, it actually seems faster to me than when I had the 64-bit version installed. I have not measured, but it is humanly as fast as you may wish it to be, I find.

Thanks for advise Marc, I just sent a request to pcdiscs for the fed5 32bit version.

I had problem setting up network settings the fedora 4 did not show the network config options it just skipped to firewall config.

I wonder if there is a setting in bios I need to check.

I bought a Edimax ADSL+2 modem router. Is there a way to install the drivers why I am waiting for my replacement disc?

I have spent best part of 3 days trying to get my server up and running.
