Fedora Core 4 How Much RAM?

How much ram do i need i only go 64MB will a swap help?

64MB is fine... as long as you don't intend to use KDE or Gnome. No, really, 64 is a little short, but it can be done. You'll have to use a 'light' desktop manager to get a system which will respond though. Swap does help (is absolutely necessary in your case), but doesn't rspond as fast as RAM.

In order to run KDE or Gnome comfortably you're looking at 265MB, and as always, the more the better :)

Code:

3.3. Memory Requirements

This section lists the memory required to install Fedora Core 4.

This list is for 32-bit x86 systems:

    *

      Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
    *

      Minimum for graphical: 192MB
    *

      Recommended for graphical: 256MB

This list is for 64-bit x86_64 systems:

    *

      Minimum for text-mode: 128MB
    *

      Minimum for graphical: 256MB
    *

      Recommended for graphical: 512MB

that is from the fedora core 4 release notes.

xp run on 64 mb? I find that hard to believe. Unless you mean "run" as in a pegged leg pirate - haphazardly and stumbling everywhere. I wouldn't want to run xp with less then 256 mb or 512 mb if i could help it. There are other distros that will "work" for you but your going to have to have a light weight windows manager and really watch what programs you install with it. If you plan to use this box as your normal computer i'd highly recommend upgrading the ram.

Will Slackware work? and do i need to upgrade my Processor to make it any faster or is it just my ram? i got Kubuntu running fine at once. it will not hurt to just to try out fedora core.

i'd check out vector - it is based on slackware. It is meant for low end machines.

here is a link with the system requirements:

How old is this computer? You'll be able to get something to "work" on it i imagine but it isn't going to perform fantastic at all i wouldn't imagine. What do you use the computer for now? What do you plan on using it for? Obviously you won't be able to play games on it or anything. If you just need it for browsing the internet and typing documents you might be fine. I forgot to look at your other specs. I wouldn't upgrade the ram. I wouldn't put any money into it. I'd look into getting a new computer. You can get reasonable priced desktops with much better specs then that.
