Fedora 9 and Gateway laptop video problems

I'm about at the end of my rope here. I installed Fedora 9 on my new Gateway m-6846 laptop. X will start; I get the graphical startup screen with the progress bar. However, when it gets to the point where the login screen should pop up, the screen first shows noise, then goes completely blank (no backlight even). I can't switch to another terminal and ctrl+alt+bksp doesn't work; ctrl-alt-del will restart the computer though. If I sweitch to a terminal

From looking at Xorg.0.log, I found that it seems to be the problem described here, which they reccomend solving by rolling back your drivers, or upgrading them to the latest. Yum says I have the latest version, and when I try to compile the driver linked on that page, ./configure says that I don't have xorg-server installed (a friend just suggested installing xorg-devel, which I'm going to try next) (Edit: Yum says there's no package named xorg-devel). Even if I get it compiled, I don't know what to do with it. I tried just changing the driver name in xorg.conf from "intel" to "i810", but X crashed with a "Fatal Error: No screens found" message.

To top it off, I can't for the life of me figure out what exact video card I have. Windows doesn't list it in Device Manager or System Properties. The closest I can find is a listing fro "Mobile Intel(R) PM965/GM965/GL960 Express Processor to DRAM Controller - 2A00." I'm sorry I don't have any more info.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.
