Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

FC2: USB thumb drive issue

Hi,

I'm trying to get my new USB thumbdrive working with autofs. It works fine if I manually mount/unmount it, but I want it to work automatically for my wife's sake.

I tried to set up autofs, by adding an entry to /etc/auto.master:

[root@fileserver mnt]# cat /etc/auto.master
/mnt/flash /etc/auto.usb --timeout=2

then I added a file called /etc/auto.usb:

[root@fileserver mnt]# cat /etc/auto.usb
usb -fstype=auto,uid=99,gid=99,umask=0022 :/dev/sda1

I re-started autofs, but when I plug in the drive, performing an 'ls' in /mnt/flash shows nothing. If I type 'df', no entry for this drive appears. If I look at /etc/mtab, I see:

[root@fileserver flash]# cat /etc/mtab
/dev/hda1 / ext3 rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
none /sys sysfs rw 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs rw 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
/dev/hde2 /home ext3 rw 0 0
/dev/hde1 /pub ext3 rw 0 0
sunrpc /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs rpc_pipefs rw 0 0
nfsd /proc/fs/nfsd nfsd rw 0 0
automount(pid23316) /mnt/flash autofs rw,fd=4,pgrp=23316,minproto=2,maxproto=4 0 0

And if I look at /var/log/messages, I see:

Jun 13 22:56:09 fileserver kernel: usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using address 6
Jun 13 22:56:09 fileserver kernel: scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

Jun 13 22:56:12 fileserver udev[24660]: creating device node '/udev/sda1'

Any ideas on why this is not working as expected? I also added a 'skip true' line in updfstab.conf.detault so that an entry in fstab was not automatically created, so that autofs could have complete control over the drive. I was still seeing this problem before I did that however.

Thanks,
Kevin
