failure to active PCMCIA WLAN cards under ifconfig

I am having lots of trouble activating PCMCIA WLAN cards under Linux.

I tried already with 2 different cards (1 linksys and 1 belkin)

when entering the card in the slot, the cardmgr application finds the cards (using cardctl ident), and identifies them as network cards.

BUT, it fails to get a logical name (eg. eth0, wlan0 etc...). I does not show up when launching ifconfig or ifconfig -a. It just doesnt find the card (except for cardctl applications how shows it clearly and the obvious beeps)

Any idea, how to activate these cards for networking?
all ideas are appreciated.

additional info:
also in the opts window the following entries are present
linksys - > orinoco_cs driver
belking -> atmel_cs driver

linux build is 2.4.18 - Debian

Thanks

Wim

I never used Wlan cards, but I had a problem with my NIC just as yours (it was there but no logical name), so I ran etherconf and everything was fine. ( I also ran rpppoe because I use adsl, but this doesnt apply to you).
