External USB SB Live 24 with snd-usb-audio: mixer too rudimentary

Hi

I'm using Debian Sid, 2.6.16-1 kernel and alsa-driver s built as modules.

However snd-usb-audio just gives me access to the (Line Out) PCM volume control in alsamixer. A Line In PCM volume control also appears in alsamixer (only, not in gnome-alsamixer or other such), but it seems to be a dumb Line In.. and I want to be able to 'redirect' the Line In to Line Out, as happens under Windows when I click on "Enable Monitoring" in the Creative Volume Control applet. Basically, my question is:

am I getting the right behaviour out of snd-usb-audio? I feel the mixer I am getting is too basic, nothing like the lovely one I have on my desktop with an audigy and emu10k1 driver :
I'd like to hear from anyone who's got this card to
-output 5.1 sound
-redirect the line in to line out immediately (so you can listen to what you re recording)

thanks
