External USB drive -- only WRITE as root

Running SUSE 9.1 with default kernel
2.6.5-7.95-default

USB external disk formatted with FAT32 is attached to Windows server and is a Samba share

Can only WRITE as root -- can't change permissions either --even as ROOT ????
Read works fine.

Is this another one of those Hotplug problems or anybody managed to get external USB disks to work properly. I need to keep the disk on the Windows server but access it READ / WRITE from the client Linux machines.

Thanx.

BTW the disk works fine when attached locally to any Linux box -- but I use the firewire connection. The 'Doze box doesn't have any firewire connections. The Disk is a Maxtor 250 GB USB 2 / firewire external disk.
