External monitor only for ATI driver

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running an ATI X300 video card. I am using Suse 10.0. I just purchased a very nice 24" monitor. When I am at home, I would like to use only the external monitor. I do not want to use a dual head setup. I can't figure out how to do this with the ATI propietary driver. I can clone the display on both, but this will not give me the 1900x1200 resolution that I want. I can set it to expand my desktop onto two monitors, but that is not what I want either. When I try to set the second monitor as the primary monitor and disable the original laptop monitor, this does not work either. Has anyone worked with the ATI drivers on a laptop enough to know the answer? I am using a very simple setup. I have simply used the ATI graphical tool to change the configuration. Please help!!!

refresh rate

Ok, I was able to get it to boot to 1920x1200 by setting up just one monitor. The only problem is that it still will automatically use a 60 Hz refresh rate. Any help on figuring out how to set it higher would be appreciated. Is there any way to turn off the damn laptop monitor. If I toggle it with Fn+F8, it will only stay off until X starts.

Is this an lcd monitor. If so most I know of goto 60 htz. Some can do 72 hz at the most.
