External hard drives

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if USB2.0 external hard drives work with modern Linux distributions?

If so, can anyone recommend a cheap ~100Gb drive please. Will these be suitable toplay both music and video files from - is the transfer rate up to it?

Pretty much any USB 2 hard drive should work with Linux, provided you have USB support correctly configured within your kernel. Not sure about running audio + video across them as I've never tried, but can't imagine it would be a problem unless you system under heavy load with other services + apps going. What Linux distro are you using just so other's know anything else that might help?

So, I'm pretty sure I've configured USB into my kernel. Now, how do I mount a USB external hard drive (ie how do you know what to name it and do you have to put it into fstab etc)

(the only thing I know how to mount is the cdrom drive and that I have in my fstab and type mount /dev/cdrom after inserting a cd to make it work (if even this is wrong, please let me know, but it seems to work))
