external hard drive seems extremely slow after formatting to ex4

I use a lot of small pocket hard drives. Usually formatted NTFS, since I have dual boot systems and friends that are windows only. I formatted one to ex4 for use with Ubuntu 9.04. After moving to ex4 copying to and from the drive is extremely slow and takes twice to three times as long as before. Is this common. I thought it would be as fast or faster then NTFS.

Go to The Road To Elysium. It is a blogsite run be Jorge - I forget his surname - and where he has several very good things to say about tweaking FC11. Ext4 has journaling going which can be switched off. Also other things to make Linux faster.

Also google fedora aspire. Should get you to the Aspire One page on the Fedoraproject.org site. Good Linux stuff which should work regardless of hardware.
