External DVD Reads and Writes REALLY Slow

Hello:

I have an interesting problem that I am unable to solve. I have two computers, one is an HP Desktop and the other is a Dell Inspiron 2650, both of which are running Ubuntu Edgy. I recently purchased an internal DVD Recorder and then bought an external USB 2.0 Case for it. (so I could use it on the laptop).

When I connect the DVD Drive to the HP, GnomeBaker or K3b will write to it with no problems at all. (Approximately 5 min for 4 gig). When I hook it up to the laptop though, GnomeBaker and K3b both write to it at speeds approximately 0.6X. It also reads from Decrypter in Wine at 0.7X .

I have done my research before posting, and tried to enable DMA on the laptop. When I enter this command: hdparm -d1 /dev/sr0 I get the following output:

setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Function not implemented

The reason why I used sr0 is because that seems to be where it is mounting my USB drive. I am scratching my head here, especially because it will work fine on my HP, just no the Dell. I have also checked to make sure that the Dell is reconizing it as a USB 2.0 Device, which it is. The enclosure is a NexStar 2 and the Drive is a : Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A .

Any advice or information that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I have been scratching my head on this for awhile now, and am very anxious to get this resolved. Thanks in advance!

I run FC so I do not know if this will apply. Whenever we see strange usb problems we use a package called usbutils. After installing via our package manager, about 50% of the time the problems just disappear. There is no configuration involved and nobody I know of understands what it is fixing, but it seems to just work. In our case if it is installed it adds (among other things) the lsusb command.

Hope it helps
