External 56k Modem
I'm getting ready to switch from Windows XP to Mandrake Linux 10.1.
Where I live I can only get 56k internet and all I own is a winmodem. I've read around the net that Serial external 56k modems work the best with linux. I've found one that looks good, it's a "Best Data 56SX-92 56K V.92 External Data/Fax Modem" Before I actually switch to Linux, I want to make sure this one will work and if so how easy is it to get working? Also price is an issue, the one above I can get for $16.99 online (that's why I'm looking into it) Thanks. P.S. I am a Linux noob. |
it's in our HCL database, with a 10 rating, so others have had good luck.

US Robotics Ext 56K
I have been using a US Robotics Sportster 56K Ext. and I have had less problems getting it to work under different distros than any of the internals(especially winmodems). Most will work after a while and some driver installations but the ext usually is always found by the install program. I have had some weird things under the Slack 10.1 as I just posted tonight. But it is working as I type under SuSE 8.2 with no problem.
