It will help a bit if we know a little bit more about your setup, what kind of network card you are using? How you should obtain IP info - DHCP, PPPoE or static IP?

what about
/sbin/ifconfig eth0
does your card show up?
As I understand Mandrake 10 is 2.6 kernel series, there is a user here who got it working check the following thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/126856 maybe you can e-mail the member and ask for help; honestly, I have never dealt with anything besides 3Com's and Intel NIC's.

Well, i am assuming that you have already loaded the " 8139too " module for your nic card. You might also want to make sure you have "loopback" module installed. I have found in the past that if i haven't connected to the net yet and i haven't loaded the loopback module, that i would get an error when specifically RH9 would boot up with the same card that you are using (same chipset i mean). That might get rid of your error. You might want to add " alias eth0 8139too " to modules.conf file in /etc/. That might help as well.
