I' m running Debian Sarge with a 2.6.8 kernel (tried with the 2.4.27 also) on an old Compaq 4000 Desktop with a Pentium II, but it refuses to find my ES1868 sound card. I've read various conflicting things in other documentation, and having become thoroughly confused, I need some help. please let me know what info you need, I'll get it for you.
Actually, alsa hadn't been installed yet, and there's no other slot this card will fit in. I traded it for another sound card from a different computer, it's a C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device, but I can't seem to get it working either, although when I lspci at least the computer recognizes it's there, even if the kernel can't use it. How can I configure the sound post-install anyway?
Well, I wound up with Debian again, although I'm still having the same problem with a different sound card, a CMI8738. Do I need to download anything besides the base ALSA packages before I run ALSA to try to get sound working? BTW, the kernel at least recognizes the card, even if it doesn't play any sound through it.
