Angry ES1868 trouble

I' m running Debian Sarge with a 2.6.8 kernel (tried with the 2.4.27 also) on an old Compaq 4000 Desktop with a Pentium II, but it refuses to find my ES1868 sound card. I've read various conflicting things in other documentation, and having become thoroughly confused, I need some help. please let me know what info you need, I'll get it for you.

lspci produced the following output:

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440FX - 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02)
0000:00:0c.0 VGA compatible controller: Cirrus Logic GD 5446
0000:00:10.0 Network controller: Compaq Computer Corporation Integrated NetFlex-3/P (rev 10)
0000:00:14.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [Natoma/Triton II] (rev 01)
0000:00:14.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 IDE [Natoma/Triton II]

Thanks,
akempo

Actually, alsa hadn't been installed yet, and there's no other slot this card will fit in. I traded it for another sound card from a different computer, it's a C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device, but I can't seem to get it working either, although when I lspci at least the computer recognizes it's there, even if the kernel can't use it. How can I configure the sound post-install anyway?

Thanks,
akempo

You know what? Never mind. I'm going to try Slack again and see if it'll work.

okay.

FTI post install sound is as easy as downloading alsa and running it or maybe even just turning it on in the kernel.

Well, I wound up with Debian again, although I'm still having the same problem with a different sound card, a CMI8738. Do I need to download anything besides the base ALSA packages before I run ALSA to try to get sound working? BTW, the kernel at least recognizes the card, even if it doesn't play any sound through it.

Thanks,
akempo
