first, do you have a dir named /lib/modules/<kernel version>/build?
insert the output of uname -r where it says <kernel version>. This dir should be a link to /usr/src/linux-2.x.xxx-xxmdk which should be the kernel source tree, if you installed the kernel sources. If not, you'll need to.
The message you saw is somewhat generic and isn't necessarily mandrake specific, that is why you can't find the file vmlinuz.version.h.
if you want to see the message you referred to again, take a look at the file /usr/include/linux/version.h. I would not recommend modifying the makefile, I *would* recommend going into the top level dir of your module source and typing make config, or ./configure before typing make all, open the makefile and look at the options it has available, sometimes a make help is useful. There should be a readme or install file provided with the source that outlines step by step commands to use in the proper order.
