error "unable to load tty" after adding HDD to Ubuntu

I added a new 300 GB HDD to my server running Ubuntu Breezy Badger. When I booted the server back up it gave me an error saying "unable to load tty" with a command prompt but I was unbale to use a lot of commands saying they couldn't be located.

Did you change the configuration of your hard drives in the process of installing the new one? For instance, if you moved the volume that mounted to /usr to a different IDE channel, or switched it from master to slave (or vice versa), I think that might cause this kind of behaviour.

yes i did...is there a way i can fix it without having to do a clean install?

If you can access /etc/fstab from your command line then it's just a matter of changing stuff around so that Linux knows to look in the right place to mount a certain partition. If you're using IDE drives then the primary channel should have hda (master) and hdb (slave), while hdc (master) and hdd (slave) are on the secondary channel. It should just be a matter of changing that last letter to reflect where the drive with most of your OS is now. If you're using SATA drives you'll have to google it, or something. I've never worked with them before.
