Error on Toshiba Satellite 310CDS (hdc: failed opcode)

Hi,

I got my hands on an old Toshiba Satellite 310CDS, made in 1998.

I tried to install Linux (Ubuntu) on it, but the installation can't even load the graphical installer, yielding the following error(s):

Code:

Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 357564
hdc: command error: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hdc: command error: status=0x54 {AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05}
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: 'I/O error, dev hdc, sector 1430256

this shows up a couple of times, the last message differs a bit from those:

Code:

Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logcial block 357564
Registerin unionfs 1.1.4
loop: loaded (max 8 devices)
squashfs: version 3.0 (2006/03/15) Phillip Laugher

The hardware on this laptop is kinda limited, Pentium 2MMX with 200MHz and only 32MB RAM.

I tried to downsize the Ramdisk so that it fits into the 32MB, but i still get the same error.

/dev/hdc is obvioulsy the CD-ROM drive, could it be, that it is broken?

please help,

NVM, I installed DamnSmallLinux instead, works fine with that...
