Smile error message stops printer install

Hello all, I am running debian 4 with KDe and have run debian for years. I use it for desktop apps - browser, webmail spreadsheet etc and have just installed and used qcad. I need to install a printer on usb - its a canon mp560. All goes well until I test it when it says 'unable to create temporary printer'. If I ignore that and continue with installation , the wizard goes fine until I click finish when I get this from the kde control module:

unable to create printer error received from Manager:

you are not authorised to access the requested resource

Do I need to set permission for myself? How do I do that please? I can log in as root, but then won't be able to use KDE and my skills then become very basic....

Thanks for any help you can offer,
Best wishes

Paul

Smile further info

Thanks to all for looking at this.

I have since been into this place:

http://localhost:631/printers/CanonMP560 (this is what I'd call CUPS online)

to add and configure the printer. It all went fine, unfortunately nothing prints when I click 'print a test page'

The printer does detect a signal of some kind because the control panel lights when the job is sent, however, nothing else happens.

I took the printer into the room next door and it prints as usual using the dreaded windows xp monster, so I guess the printer is o.k

Just by way of more info, my system is just an amd64 running debian 4 (for a few years) and it all works fine, I have just never installed a printer on it. I run open office, kmail and firefox via our local internet router. I am the sole user and I have a root account and a user account.

I logged in as root and did adduser paul lp

and that returned a positive reply to let me know i had been added to the group, I guess this gives me permission to print does it?

Many thanks if anyone can throw any light on this for me.
Paul
