Exclamation Epson Stylus NX510 Printer Not Recognized in openSuse 11.3

I got my Epson stylus NX510 all-in-one printer (just the actual printer worked, couldn't get the scanner recognized) working in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. I'm currently attempting a dual boot with OpenSuse 11.3, but when I go to download the driver for it like I did in Ubuntu (and it worked) I get the following error messages:

(I'm downloading epson-inkjet-printer-stylus-tx550w-series-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.nT6NON] Repository already exists.

failed to install file: [PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.nT6NON] Repository already exists.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have no idea what that means. I would be very very grateful if someone could assist me in getting this stupid thing up and running.

Downloaded from where, with what command? Could you please provide more details about what you've tried and what results you got?

Official drivers are offered by avasys, and the proprietary turboprint also supports most Epson printers. The FOSS gutenprint package generally seems to add support for new models within a year of them being introduced.

Pretty much the same goes for scanners, with avasys offering their proprietary iscan, and the third-party vuescan also supporting most models. In addition, the regular sane epson2 backend generally is able to support all epson printers at a basic level, even when not specifically listed.

The respective links to the above are in my signature.

Downloaded from the Avasys website on the all-in-ones printer page... point and click. I'm not really a buff on the command line yet, I'm learning, though! I've tried downloading the driver multiple times, but I get the same "Repository already exists" result. The .deb package equivalent worked in ubuntu, but the .rpm in Suse just won't do it.

I'm trying really hard to learn this stuff, but sometimes I get stuck. If you see ANY mistakes I'm making, I'd appreciate a tip or two on how to get back on track. Talk to me like I'm ten, because I want to know EXACTLY how to do stuff.

So what command would I use to download that driver file without pointing and clicking? And, just basically, how do you construct a command that downloads a file from the internet? (Wow, I'm such a newbie. Forgive me!!)

------
Edit:
I deleted the repository it said was messed up, and now I get a window that says: "The action could not be completed. The request failed. More details are available in the detailed report." and the report says: "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

So confused!!

But where and how are you getting that error message? What exactly did you do, step-by-step?

Simply downloading the package from this link works fine for me.
http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/do...n-inkjet/escp/

I can't say for sure, but it looks to me like you've simply chosen to let the browser attempt to launch the file directly, instead of saving it. So first it attempts to download the package to a temp file, but finds it already sitting there from your previous attempts. Then after that it tries to execute it, but can't, probably because you aren't in administrator mode when you attempt it or something.

Have you tried simply saving the package to your disk first and then used your system's package manager to install it manually, as root?

I've found that Google is generally the easiest way to discover how to do most administrative activities like this. A simple "opensuse howto install rpm" gave plenty of hits, such as this one:

OHHHHH!! I WAS opening it instead of saving it.... You, my good sir, are awesome. I never even noticed!!

Thank you so much!!

Final Question: Is it possible (or worth it) to set up sane on a network? I can do it from my desktop but then I have to move each scanned file over to my laptop... Can I have it set up so when I scan, I can have my laptop immediately pick it up?

Yes, sane has the ability to make a scanner available over a network. I couldn't tell you exactly how to do it though. Again, GIYF (Google Is Your Friend).
