Epson C62 Ink Monitering

Hi everyone,

Over Christmas I got bought a Epson c62. It works in Linux very well and was easy to set up. However...

I cannot access the ink levels left in my printer though I have found ther Mtink program which should be able to do this.

When loading the program a window comes up saying that it doesn't have access priveliges to the printer. It also suggests looking at the web site which I did but didn't seem to help :(

Does anyone know how I can get mtink to moniter my printers ink levels?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Not familiar with mtink, but the printer device is probably owned by root and lpd or cups or whatever is doing the user level translation so you can print to it as joe user. You can probably get the kid to work by opening a terminal, su'ing to root and then running mtink out of that, probably.

Yes that worked. Thank you very much! Least I know the mtink program worked

Sucks a bit that I have to keep going to root just to check my ink levels. Is their no way of giving mtink root privelige?

Yes, maybe... it would be a matter of compiling mtink suid root, which may or may not be a headache. Trying to do it from the other side and give anyone all access to the printer would be a bit of a headache. Check the documentation with mtink if they give you the option, otherwise it may not be worth the hastle.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll pass mucking around to much with mtink. I probably dont have a clue how to compile it.

It was automatically installed by mandrake when it configured by my epson printer.

.. and after thinking about it logging on as root is not that bad to check my ink once in a while.

Thanks again

i installed from a tarball because i doesn't come with SuSE, try cd /path/to/mtink then chown root mtink and then chmod 4755 mtink
