Epson 1260 & scanner function buttons

Hi

I installed Epson 1260 Perfection scanner to my computer running RH 9.0. Sane and Xsane and scanimage works fine, but I want to use those front panel buttons of my scanner and make shellscripts to utilise them for quick use. For example first key for "Scan to file", second key to "Copy to printer" and third for "Send as fax".

As I understand, those shellscripts are quite straightforward to do, but how can I catch those keystrokes from my scanner and attach them to run right script ?

As a matter of fact, I have allready made shellscripts for "Scan to file" and "Copy to printer" functions and working on "Send as fax" script. But I really want to use those scanner buttons, because others who are using the same scanner, doesn't want to know anything about linux. ( They doesn't want know anything about windows either, they just want get their jobs done). And I think the best way to do that is in utilising those scanner buttons.

Re: Epson 1260 & scanner function buttons

Hi. I don't know the answer to your question, but would be very interested to know. I'm about to buy a 1660 scanner, and was assuming that the one-touch buttons would not work at all.

If you use the command "sane-find-scanner", it should report the device filename that your scanner is connected to. Say that is /dev/usb/scanner0. If you find such a filename, then what happens if you run the command:

cat < /dev/usb/scanner0

and then start hitting buttons.

You may have to su to root, or change the permissions of the device file.

Can you try that and tell us what happens?

Cheers,

Ross-c
