Post ensoniq 1371 loses alsa configuration every other boot

This is one of those weird issues I'm not even sure how to phrase the question. However, I think the subject line is accurate: every other boot, I have to run alsaconf and reboot to get the sound card to work. Any experience with this problem or recommendations for a solution? Thanks.

Perhaps I am a little confused here...

You are saying that on boot your audio isn't working, and the only way to fix it is to run alsaconfig and then...reboot? Isn't that a recursive problem? Logically, if the changes made by alsaconf are surviving that initial reboot, then they should be working through any number of starts.

Are you saying that if you ran alsaconfig and then shut the machine down for an hour it wouldn't work, but if you did an immediate reboot after alsaconfig it would?

Have you tested this device under Windows, or even a live CD?

Clearly there is one of two problems here. Either the hardware is damaged, or the driver does not work properly.

Trying the card out under Windows should help to figure out if the hardware is working (since we know the Windows driver certainly works), and then trying it with different kernels (via the live CDs) will verify if there is a persistent kernel bug for this particular device.

Thanks. This will be easy to test as this is a multi-boot system with both lenny and xp available. I'll check out the card with both and post the result. Thanks again.

Smile ensoniq 1371 loses alsa configuration every other boot

the card works both under lenny as well as XP-home. Guess that points to a bug with the etch driver. so given my lack of expertise I guess that means I will learn to live with it!
