Enabling nVidia drivers kills X

I was trying to install and enable nVidia drivers, but if they are enabled, then on restart, X fails to start. As I understand, this might be a problem in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Here is the configuration that works:

Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

This is the place with the driver:

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420"
        Driver "vesa"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
If I change the Driver to "nvidia", and restart, X doesn't work. I've tried using envy and automatix to do this... They kill X too. Any suggestions???

Code:
Section "Module"
        Load "bitmap"
        Load "ddc"
# Load "dri"
        Load "extmod"

        Load "int10"
        Load "type1"
        Load "vbe"
EndSection
You should comment out the "Load "dri" line.

I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and the card is an nVidia GeForce4 MX 420

Commenting out the Load dri line doesn't help, and the same thing occurs. Could it somehow be a problem with the actual drivers?

If I try to set the driver by doing dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, same thing happens. Thanks, any more ideas?

When I look at the X output which it gives when X dies, it only tells me the fact that it is using the default conf file and the log file. Could the log be of any use?

Of course, that's what it is for.
Did you try what I suggested in post #2, above?

You have Option DPMS set for the monitor, but this is an nVidia option. Try moving that line into that section (under the Driver statement).
