Question Enable Big Desktop across multiple cards using fglrx

Linux Newbie here, and trying to get my current setup to display the way I want it to. What I have is 2 ATI HD3850 Cards on an ASUS p5k/epu board. This board provides a single 16X pcie slot and a 4X pcie slot for video. My distro is Slamd64 12.1 with the stock kernel.
I can get a spanning desktop when I hook two monitors up to one of the cards (using both outputs) but when I have two monitors connected to two seperate cards (using one output on each card) I can at best get two desktops that my mouse can traverse, but I can't drag windows across. Also, I've noticed that although I can set seperate resolutions for each monitor in xorg.conf, the Catalyst Control Center only allows me to activate one display, and when I choose "identify displays" each monitor is identified as "1". Has anyone been able to get big desktop working using two cards vs one multihead card?? I've searched LQ and googled the problem, but all answers seem to point to using a single card with multiple display heads.

Thanks
