Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have an Affrey 10x DVD-ROM on hdd (hdc is my TDK CD-Writer, hda is 160GB Maxtor, no hdb). The DVD mounts DVDs, CDs OK, but as soon as I try to play a DVD video (using mplayer, xine, ogle, etc...) I am getting the following errors in my logs just before my system eventually goes kaput (have to do a hard reset):
Aug 2 17:42:34 threedogs kernel: ide-cd: cmd 0xad timed out
Aug 2 17:42:34 threedogs kernel: hdd: lost interrupt
I have tried various combinations of ACPI being on / off, setting pci=noacpi, with/without noapic, turning DMA on and off for the drive, etc... Also have tried playing the DVD while mounted (automount) and umounted. When I had windows on the same computer the drive worked perfectly in windows.
If anyone has suggestions / ideas I would be most grateful.
