DVD reading problem

This one is busting my buttons.

Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
Dell installed DVD reader/writer

I frequently get I/O errors when reading DVDs in this machine - DVDs which I have WRITTEN with this machine! A recent error which occurred while copying a file from the DVD to the Desktop said
Quote:

Error splicing file: Input/output error
Looking in the system log I find many entries such as
Quote:

Jun 12 15:10:53 taylor12 kernel: [ 474.132496] attempt to access beyond end of device
Jun 12 15:10:53 taylor12 kernel: [ 474.132498] sr0: rw=0, want=7160628, limit=2097151
To further confuse things... I can read the same DVD in the same drive by using a VMWare XP guest machine.

These DVDs are simply data files burned to the DVD, not video DVDs.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Ken

p.s. I just tried copying the DVD after disconnecting the DVD drive from the virtual machine and it seems to be working(?) A resource conflict between the host and guest(?)

Sounds more like an allocation of resources to the guest, and excluding the host from using that resource.

One other thing I have found. I have a spindle of Memorex DVD+R blanks which are experiencing high failure rates. I had used 3 spindles of these blanks with no problems. The blanks from the last batch will fail to burn under Linux about half the time. I even replaced the burner and things got worse. Interestingly they work better when burned from a Windows XP virtual machine running on the host and using the same burner. The disks which had reading conflicts with a running VM were from this same batch.
