DVD-R Drive

Does any one know how to mount a DVD-R so it can act as a drive. What i am looking to do is have a script file that will automaticaly back up the contents of my home directory to the DVD drive.

There are a few windows programs that will do this, but i have not found anything for Linux that will work

You can mount the DVD-R just like any CD-ROM or DVD drive. To record on to a DVD-R disc, download cdrecord and apply the DVD patch. Read through the cdrecord manual on how to make a DVD-R. You may have to create an iso image before writing a DVD disc. Do not forget to setup the DVD-R drive as a SCSI drive because cdrecord only works on SCSI commands not IDE.
