dvd drive

My dvd drive is not opening live iso images. If i put in a disc of, say photographs, the drive opens them okay. If I try to open a live dvd of a distro, such as Mint, it behaves as if the drive is empty and just opens off my hard drive.

I updated Mint yesterday and I suspect this has something to do with it.

Any ideas, anyone, please?

Hi there,

from the rest of the description, I take it that you mean it doesn't boot from these discs. "Open" is a strange term in this context.
How did you burn the CD? I hope you didn't simply create a data CD and put the ISO file on it. That won't get you anywhere; you have to select "Burn ISO image" or something similar in your CD/DVD writing software.

Alright, let's go step by step. I don't think it has to do with the Mint update; that wouldn't make sense.
  • Boot your computer normally, that it, from HDD. Then put the Live CD/DVD into the drive. Can you access the files on it?
  • If yes: The drive and the disc seem okay.
  • If no: Either the drive or the disc itself is faulty. Since you report that you can read other discs fine, a problem with the drive is unlikely.
  • Do you have any Windows installation disc available, or can you borrow one for a short time? Try to boot from that. Does it work? If no, it's very probably the settings in your BIOS that don't consider the CD/DVD drive as a boot device.

Check the boot settings in your BIOS: Does it try to boot from CD/DVD at all? If so, does it try CD/DVD before HDD?

Doc CPU,

Thanks for your many suggestions. I found that, somehow, my BIOS no longer had the DVD drive as a bootable choice. Once I put that right I found all is well.

Glad you were around. Thanks again.
