In my Compaq Presario 3000 with Suse 10.0 I can read DVDs, and boot from them. But reading CDs fail. (It behaves similarly with XP.) Is this a bios, drive or SW problem? (I fail to understand how it can be SW, but then who knows what weird solutions it uses?) Does the drive have separate circuitry for treating DVD/CD signal processing?
Distribution: RHEL/CentOS/SL 5 i386 and x86_64 pata for IDE in use

Could be a BIOS problem and/or a firmware problem, check for both. Compaq may have a BIOS upgrade available and just might have a firmware upgrade available for the CD/DVD drive. If not check at the manufacturers site for a firmware upgrade for the CD/DVD drvice. Hint; cdrecord -scanbus
