DVD Burning, not enough space on the HDD.

Ok heres the deal guys. Im running Ubuntu 8.04.1 on an Acer Aspire One, with an 8 gig SSD and 4 gig SDHC. Im using DeVeDe to burn some avi's to DVD. Heres my issue: I dont have enough space for devede to create the ISO file before its burned to disc. Now i know that the answer is easy, "Your hard drive isn't big enough". Heres my real question...When it tells me i dont have enough space, it also says, "Do not select a FAT/FAT32 sysem to copy to". So can i not use an external HDD or SDHC (8 gigs or larger) to copy to? Or can i format the HDD or SDHC to an ext3 file system as opposed to fat/fat32? Thanks a bunch!

Yes, I use a 14G partition formated to ext3 to create iso images.
