dull screen

Hello everyone,

I've been working on my computer, an HP Pavilion ze4400 laptop for the past two years, never noticing anything out of the ordinary. My father purchased a laptop the other day (Balance - Walmart), and asked me to set it up for him. I set it down next to mine, powered it on, and for the first time realized just how dull my screen was. I'm now having problems going back and forth, and fear many of the headaches I've been having recently are due to the dullness of the screen.

I've got the brightness as high as it goes, and I've messed around with the gamma settings, but are there any other settings I'm forgetting? Maybe a software solution that does what bleach does to dirty white clothes? Is there something that just happens to these monitors over time? What's the easiest (and cheapest) way to get this thing fixed, or am I looking at just getting a new LCD?

Thanks everyone,
James

Yes, the backlight tends to fade in brightness over time. But no biggy, it should always be usable.

Messing around with gamma? Arg... I'd actually just make sure the contrast is adjusted so as to make the screen and type faces clear to read.

Thanks slackmeup,

I've been using xgamma to mess with the gamma (actually a quick python script with glade, to make adjustments easier)... What would i use to adjust the contrast? I've been looking through xorg docs, but can't find a tool to do it....
