Dual Radeon HD6450 & intel onboard graphics: cannot get radeons to start

Hi,
I have a hp8800 desktop with integrated graphics and dual radeon HD6450. I plan to use the radeons in dual seat setup, with onboard intel graphics left unused. I run ubuntu 12.04 64bit. System works fine with onboard intel graphics but I cannot get even a single radeon to run.

Code:
lspci|grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450]
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450]
The cards are detected:
Code:
 aticonfig --list-adapters
* 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 6450
  1. 02:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 6450
I create a tiny xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "ATI 1"
  Driver "fglrx"
  BusID	"PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	DefaultDepth	24
EndSection

Section "Module"
	Load	"glx"
EndSection
This leads to complaints about missing devices in Xorg.log:

Maybe related: if I disable the onboard intel graphics from BIOS, I get the boot screen on first Radeon. However, the computer fails to detect my second harddisk.

Can you identify the driver needed by the Radeon cards, and is the driver loaded?

You mean the kernel module is loaded? Yes, lsmod reports fglrx to be loaded. HD6450 is also listed as supported by the driver.

Earlier I had no success with opensource "radeon" driver either, but I try again.

Go step for step. Try it with one card only, Intel graphics disabled. If that works exchange the cards and try it again. Just to make sure that both cards are really working correctly, I have seen symptoms like you describe (missing harddisk) when a graphics card is faulty.

Thank you TobiSGD. Sometimes one just needs a sort of obvious advice...

I took out one card, then another, put both back, ... And voila, suddenly the cards worked. It seems like the problem is some sort of misunderstanding between one of the harddisks, two graphic cards, BIOS, and kernel 3.2.0-24. Basically, I have a working system now (sound still needs work). The problem is still rebooting where I have to restart the computer about 10 times before it recognizes the second harddisk. But as this is intended to be a server, running for weeks or months, that is not a big issue.

A little bit offtopic, but I also list here my dual seat configuration, just for the reference.

lightdm.config:
Code:
[SeatDefaults]

# Unity
greeter-session=unity-greeter
user-session=ubuntu

[Seat:0]
xserver-command=/usr/bin/X -config xorg_door.conf -nolisten tcp -isolateDevice PCI:2:0:0 vt7 -keeptty

[Seat:1]
xserver-command=/usr/bin/X -config xorg_window.conf -nolisten tcp -isolateDevice PCI:1:0:0 -sharevts -keeptty
xorg_door.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "gfx_door"
        Driver "radeon"
        BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "ignore_other_seats"
    Option "Ignore" "yes"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "input_door"
    MatchTag "input_door"
    Option "Ignore" "no"
EndSection
xorg_window.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "gfx_window"
        Driver "radeon"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "ignore_other_seats"
    Option "Ignore" "yes"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "input_default"
    MatchTag "input_default"
    Option "Ignore" "no"
EndSection
I also have an external usb hub, assigned to the door seat. The corresponding udev rules:
Code:
 cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-seat.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="input", ENV{ID_INPUT.tags}="input_default"
SUBSYSTEM=="input", DEVPATH=="/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.3/*", ENV{ID_INPUT.tags}="input_door"
Note: you have to figure out your own devpath.

Edit: Had to adjust the config files.
