Drivers for the Radeon x1950 PRO?

(Linux newbe alert)

Hi, I'm building a new PC and for monetary reasons decided to leave nVidia's solutions and buy an ATI Radeon X1950 PRO.

I'm also using this opportunity to finally install a Linux Distro.
Unless I'm told of a better alternative at this point I'm looking at either Ubuntu (w/the KDE GUI) or Mepis.

Earlier I visited (AMD) ATI's site for a driver DL and saw that it supported the x1900 and HD2600 + series but not the X1950 series.

Does this mean other series's drivers will work or that my chip is unsupported under Linux?

What is the current best course of action to get 3D support for ATI GPUs under Linux?

Envy works for me

Hi KeeperOS

I've found that Kubuntu Feisty is a great distro to sink your teeth into.

The easiest way to get the drivers for your card is to install Envy.

http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
(Don't worry about the Nvidia bit, works for ATI as well)

Download the package for Ubuntu and install by typing "sudo dpkg -i envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu12_all.deb" (minus quotation marks) in the command line (press alt+F2 then type konsole and click ok).

Once installed, start Envy and follow the on-screen prompts.

Hey, I didn't know Envy was for ATI drivers as well.
Yeah, the one I've been toying with is Ubuntu with the KDE GUI( I prefer the ubuntu to kubuntu apps that's all) and I know that it for sure supports my vga for 2D (through the vesa drivers).

Still, it says it downloads the appropriate driver from the ATI site and the ati site doesn't list my 1950 at their driver list...

As far as I know, there are different driver packages for multiple cards, and Envy should be able to install the right driver automagically. I use nvidia myself and had to play around with the xorg.conf file a bit to get things working properly (Beryl issues), but Envy is definitely the way to go.
