driver problem with intel pro e1000
hi,
i am trying to install an intel pro e1000 network under mantrake 9.2. unfortunately i am restricted to a 2.4 kernel. however it does not seem to recognise/find the card (or the driver).
i've got the driver from the intel website and compiled/installed it (make install). then using "insmod e1000" i added it to the system (as given in the readme). to my /etc/modules.conf i then added
alias eth0 e1000
and then configured the network card using ifcfg-eth0. restarting the network resulted in a failure.
strangely, when i boot my computer and it's about to start eth0 there's a message saying something about insmod errors. sorry, it was too fast to write it all down.
please let me know what i need to do to get the card working. i'm a newbie so i have little chance on solving it on my own. any help is appreciated (also if i should be posting elsewhere).
from other posts i think this might be helpful.
lspcidrake shows:
unknown : unknown (8086/1076/8086/1113) [NETWORK_ETHERNET]
and modprobe -c|grep eth shows:
alias eth0 e1000
thanks for the help,
tom

more info
here some more info taken from a log file, maybe this helps to localise the problem.
from /var/log/syslog:
....

localhost drakconnect[2016]: Switching to "default" profile
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth1
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth2
....
maybe this can give someone an idea of why it's not working. i have the same card, same driver work flawless on two other machines. this one just has a different motherboard.
thanks for any help,
tom

If you're not using 5.6.10.1, download the latest source files from SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000
After un-gzipping and un-tarring, view the README file for installation instructions. It hasn't worked 100% for me yet, but it's alot better than the error messages I was getting ("can't load module e1000", "missing kernel or user mode driver e1000").

initially i was using an older 5.5.x version which had worked elsewhere. but now i installed the latest (5.6.10.1) one and still the same effect. i get no errors/messages during neither the "make install", nor the "insmod e1000". but when restarting the /etc/init.d/network then it will fail.
i even replced the card with another one in case this was a hardware problem, but no improvement.
i have no idea where the problem could be. i specifically bought this card cause it worked so easily and well before.
thanks for you help anyway
