Driver for video card

I have done a foolish thing and modified my graphics packages without paying attention to what I was doing. In Ubuntu, using the Synaptic Package Manager I have installed and uninstalled packages relating to "nvidia-glx" and "fglrx". I am using a Radeon 9600 video card. I have had several programs like SecondLife and Google Earth give me errors since that point. Any suggestions?
