driver for "Corp. 82800DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller"?

Fedora Core 3, KDE. The soundcard detector detects:

Vendor: Intel
Model: Corp. 82800DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0

I don't know what any of that means, but the test sound won't play. I'm assuming I'm missing the driver to use that type of sound card. Where might I find one, if one is available?

Drivers come with your kernel, whats the problem? The soundtest is known to fail miserably but you may still be able to play audio.

Check the Kmix for volume levels. If nothing shows up in the kmix then you have a problem. Once you've checked that your device is there and that the volumes are on (yes, I know it sounds dumb but just check if your volumes are not muted). Run any audio app such as juk amarok or kscd and try to play something (a disc, some oggs or anything).

Thanks! All the volumes were muted. Now it plays sound effects I found on the local disk. I can't open any CDs, though. It always says it failed to mount when I check the CD drive in konquerer.

You dont really need to mount audio cds to play them. Just launch kscd pop the disc in and the disc should get played, kscd has some weird settings and you actually have to point it to the right /dev/cdrom thingie though.

konquerer as super user shows no dev/cdrom folder, even with a CD in. kscd doesn't recognize anything, and I can't mount the CD ROM device from konquerer, either. Where's my CD drive?

Wow wait a minute, never mess around with the /dev folder. I didnt told you to go there, I told you to check kscd config and point it to the right drive (most like /dev/cdrom).
