driver for cd-rom

i just tried to burn a cd for the first time (using k3b), and it didn't work. it told me that i needed to use a driver for the burning capabilities, and i should use the option "-generic-mms" (or something like that--i forget the exact name of the driver) to force use of the driver.

so here's my question: how do i do that? i don't know what command that is an option for. also, my cd rom is working quite fine in every other way--is it possible for me to just use that driver when burning and not at other times? would that be worthwhile?

thanks a lot for any feedback.
