drive switches to read-only

We are running Fedora Core 3 on a Gateway computer. Three times in the past 2 months we have experienced what appear to be drive failures. The system will switch to read-only and we receive the following error repeatedly:

EXT3-fs error (device hda6) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

Each time, we have rebooted the system and everything has returned to normal until the problem reoccurs.

We are assuming we have a problem with our hardware, but are not sure how to fix it. Any suggestions???

Use a live Linux distribution and run fsck on the bad partition.
