Unhappy drive is dying?

Hello,
it's a relatively (1yo)new drive. Other drives are between 3 to 6 yo (yeah i know).
I'm not sure what's going on. But i did noticed that ls takes lots of time to produce the output. It runs under LVM2 and has ext3. There is plenty of space.
I'm clueless what to think.

Here is the content of the messages:

Those errors certainly don't look good, no. Have you checked the SMART data for the drive? You should also see if the drive manufacturer offers a diagnostic application to do a more thorough test on the drive and controller.

Well try running smartctl on it, post the output of:

Code:
smartctl -A /dev/sda
Then run a long test and wait for it to finish:

Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/sda
Then post the output of:

Code:
smartctl -a /dev/sda
Change '/dev/sda' to whatever the drive is.

You can also use the manufacturer's diagnostic utility, it's probably on this disk:

So far the drive looks fine, it looks to be new and has no signs of failing.

It looks like this is a SATA drive in PATA mode. You could try going into the BIOS and setting it to AHCI mode, this may solve issues related to the pata kernel driver. If you also post the output of 'lspci -vv' we can see which driver it is currently using.

SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 90% 2342 1951440065
This is not good, this means that there are probably some bad blocks on the drive. Not good news, if the drive is in warrantee you may want to talk to the manufacturer about this. Do run the manufacturer's utils on the drive just to make sure, search for it, or one of the ones on the UBCD might be able to do it.

could this error be due to power save mode, that I set up on the drive? I think it (drive) goes into sleep mode in 30 minutes .
Thank you.

I don't see how this could be related. Bad blocks mean that the drive is damaged and certain blocks can no longer be used. Sleep mode cannot cause damage. Either the drive has worn out or if it's within warrantee they may replace it because it is faulty.

Was any data lost ? Did it die already ? If it didn't, just copy the data out. If it did die, then use testdisk of foremost to try and recover it.

This past weekend I had an issue with my hard drive which is 4 years old and had developed some bad sectors. The drive was for the most part useable, but when I tried to resize one of the partitions it would fail. I downloaded the program HDD Regenerator which magically seems to have gotten rid of the physically bad sectors on the drive and allowed me to proceed at least up until the present without any problems. I used the free trial version which allows you to repair one bad sector per boot of the computer, assuming the sector is repairable.

It's not open source, so it requires trust on your part in order to use it, but my experience with it was positive. In my case the manufacturers' (Hitachi and Lenovo) CDs were not able to repair the drive but this one was. If you have crucial data on that drive and you can't get it to work, and the manufacturer's repair utility doesn't work to fix it, then it's possible you could try something like that.
