Question Does this mean a physically failing hard drive?

Started to notice these errors in my syslog... system is only a couple months old. Development & testing is finished and we're about to go live so if this drive is failing I'd like to take care of it before we're live =)

The data on the drive seems to be OK, currently it is about 40% filled and processing about 100 mySQL operations per second, 24x7. The only thing on this particular drive is database tables.

The drive in question is a Fujitsu 15k RPM SCSI 320, OS is Fedora Core 4 (64 bit version) with all official updates applied.

So do the logs below mean the drive is hosed, or are there additional troubleshooting steps I should take?

Thanks much!

There are two bad areas on the drive. You can try reformating the drive with write pattern detection, for example:

mke2fs -c-c -j /dev/sdc

If that doesn't work, or you don't want to risk a progressive failure, then by all means replace the drive.

"progressive failure" has a rather ominous ring to it... I think I'll go about finding a new drive.

Thanks much for the info!

This is usually an indicator that a drive is going bad. I had a similar problem recently, fsck seemed to take care of the problem. Haven't had any errors since then, but I'll be keeping an eye on it for a while.

Does anybody know how to query the vendor's (Fujitsu in this case) serial number from the drive from within Linux?

I'd love to be able to start the RMA process without having to take down, unrack, disassemble, etc.

Thanks again!

@Chromezero:
I unmounted the drive, e2fsck (with bad block scan), and then remounted on the 17th. Errors started again on the 19th. =(

To get the serial number:

hdparm -i /dev/sdc

The fsck can not correct a medium error, only a filesystem error. The bad sectors need to be mapped out on the drive. A failing drive can report an increasing number of sectors as bad, until the sector spares on the drive are exhausted.

I realize they cannot be fixed, but I thought mapping them with a bad block scan would tell the drive to not use those sectors.(?) That is what I did on Monday, but we have errors again yesterday. Either I didn't use e2fsck correctly, or it's getting worse. Either way, the drive is being replaced.

I assume this means the driver or drive itself don't support reading the S/N:
Code:
[root@tskuhn log]# hdparm -i /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:
 HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument
Thank you again, you've been very helpful!

EDIT: I thought hdparm was for IDE only anyway...?

OK, then try the sginfo command:

sginfo -s /dev/sdc

If you need the software, it's probably available from your distributions as part of package 'sg3_utils', which you should have installed anyway.

Right on! I had never heard of sginfo before, I'll have to remember that one.

Thanks yet again.

Try hdparm -I /dev/sdc (Capital I) and see what that gives you. On PATA/EIDE drives (/dev/hd*) it gives the LONG version report of the drive.
