I am thinking about getting a zen micro and would like to know if it works with linux? It looks a lot sexier than the ipod. Thanks.

yeha it works fine, use neutrino or gnomad2 to use it on Linux. Note that it will NOT behave as a USB mass storage device. i.e. you can't mount it like a cd, and use it like that. you need to use one of these interfaces. This nearly stopped me getting a Nomad Zen Xtra last week, but it's such good value compared to iPod, i went for it anyway.

How about an app that works in something besides Gnome?

That would be nice. Even if it was command-line. I finally got gnomad2 installed but I think the new firmware for it screws with the way it interfaces so it doesn't work.

those apps do not work "in gnome" they simply use gtk libraries, which is a HUGE difference, and so they will run under any WM at all, as long as gtk is installed.

I think you have to allocate part of the Zen Micro's hard drive for storage, at least thats what you have to do in Windows to get it to use part of the HD as USB storage (Zen Micro was built to work specifically with Windows)

Should tell you how to do that in Zen Micro manual, although it pretty easy to figure out just going throough Zen Micro menus

I'm guessing it simply just does not have the logic to be a usb mountable device. It uses a protocol called MTP... do a 'yum search mtp' to find the packages that will alow gnome2 (etc) to access the device.

I have an original zen, 4GB model. With Banshee, and a current kernel no problems. Amarok is rumored to work with some people's. Not my experience.

Run as sudo: "lshw", and get the id numbers, then search google, yahoo, or any other variety of engines to look for compatibility issues.

One note, hackers are notorious for trying to contaminate the USB drive by making it unmountable, so as a precaution, don't have uPnp active, or just click the connection manager, or even: "ifconfig __interface__ down".

I'd suggest running a gnome program called 'grip' to rip cd's. And, within the lame options, delete the first two var's, and set q 0, then bitrate of 320. Kills, just kills, windows ops.
