Do Radeon drivers still suck????

I'm looking at new laptops and most are running Radeon chipsets.

After YEARS of Radeon chipset driver hell (video, modem & etc.), I have been buying NVidia only.

What is the state of Radeon Linux drivers, do they still suck?

My desktop- until the PSU recently blew- ran ati drivers before I got a pci-e nvidia card.
3d rendering, opengl, etc worked great for me. I used it for blender and k3b.
