Having only one big module instead of two slightly slower ones will give you noticable performance impacts, since the memory controller can't use the dual-channel feature. The memory controller can handle two modules just as fast as a single module, usually the downclock of one step only happens when you use two modules per channel (at least on AMD CPUs, I couldn't find reliable data for intel CPUs on this, but I assume that it is the same for them).
