dma_timer_expiry

Hi

Im running redhat 9 with the default most recent kernel on an abit bp6 mobo. After a recent upgrade during which i moved my main drive from the default ata33 connection to the on board hipoint udma66 controller, ive come across a problem. Occasionally, the computer locks up, the hdd light stays on and the following error is displayed on screen:

hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma status 0x21
hde: error waiting for DMA

This appears to happen at random, sometimes after more than a week of the system running fine, or at other times a few minutes after a reboot.

What would be causing this?

thanks
Simon

I amBP6 user myself and I can say that your problem is heat! I added fan to my motherboard heatsink, put thermal grease under it and added extra case fan to blow out heat. Use also the RU bios and make sure that your motherboard is not suffering from bad capasitor.
I run currently Mandrake 9.2 smp cernel and do not complain. I had all kind of mysterios problems before, but not any more.
