Arrow DMA interrupt while mounting cdrom

Hey ho

I just have set up the new email server with redhat 9.0.
It has two 80gb harddisks (primary & secondary master) in a raid 1 and the cdrom device is set as secondary slave.
Now if I want to mount the cdrom device following error occures (also system failure...):

----
hdb: attached ide-cdrom driver.
hdb: DMA interrupt recovery
hdb: lost interrupt
hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
hda: error waiting for DMA
----

hda is the first harddisk
hdb is the cdrom device

What is the problem and how can I fix it???

Hope you can help me

Hi Thorsten,

I'm facing the same problem too, but with hdd (have a cdrom on secondary master ie., hdc and hdd on secondary slave).

I couldn't find any solutions to this problem on any of the linux fora.

Have you been able to get over this problem? If so, could you please share?

I've tried upgrading the kernel from SMP-2.4.8 to SMP 2.4.20-20 without any success. I haven't tried to disable the dma on the BIOS
for secondary IDE channel, but this is one of the things I am going to try tonight.

As far as the hardware setup is concerned, I have a dual PII 450MHz setup running on Tyan 1832 motherboard (it's an Intel 440bx chipset).

Could you let me know how you solved this issue?

Thank you,
Ashwin.

Problem fixed.

The problem got fixed and I still don't have a clue how or what happened.

Here's what I did:
I downloaded Kernel 2.4.20-20 for SMP i586 version in a RPM format and installed (Earlier I had downloaded and installed the i686 version). The CD-Rom started working ok and the mouse was behaving nicely too.
After a while I decided to reboot and accidentally booted in the old smp kernel (2.4.8 I think) and the CDRom continued to work! This is the part I'm not able to explain. If it worked now, how come it didn't work eariler? As far as I know I haven't changed any settings or installed / uninstalled any libraries or patches.

Cheers,

Ashwin.
