Some of the points to check in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
HorizSync and VertRefresh lines in the monitor section; the values must match those of your monitor (read manual or find them on the internet)
resolutions in the display subsections of the section screen
Please post the sections device , monitor and screen of above file if you don't come right.

In your monitor section for 'Monitor0', definitely replace the horizsync and vertrefresh rates to match the manufacturers specs of your monitor.
Also, while the first choice of the X server should be the Modelines, you ought to add other resolutions that you want, in the 'Screen' section, where "800x600" is the only resolution provided.
Basically, this should fix the problems of A) the V + H ranges are limiting your resolution, and B) the only modes provided in the Screen section is "800x600".

I assume that Screen0 is currently used as it refers to a device with identifier Card0.

I'm curious.. You only use ONE monitor, correct? If so, where did this xorg.conf file come from? It looks like it came from a totally different system than yours.
Anyhow, what have you done so far, using the above suggestions from myself and Wim, to try to get this working? And how is it working now?
Perhaps it would be helpful at this point, to either EDIT one of your above posts, or give us a new post, containing your WHOLE, CURRENT xorg.conf file. Let's see what it looks like now.

I have added 1152x864 but it aint working ie it is not shown plus the above setting make my screen go beyond monitor screen so i have to move my mouse to get to rest of the screen. Also if set it back to 800x600 and reboot then that setting is lost and 1024x768 is reset ......

According to
http://www.samsung.com/za/products/m...Specifications , your monitor can not do 1152x864. In which case it makes sense that you get a virtual screen and you have to move your mouse 'outside' the monitor to see the rest.
Further there are two sets for HorizSync and VerRefresh in your Monitor0 section; I'm not sure which one will be used by xorg (probably the first one). However, both don't match the specs of your monitor. Please be aware that the values that I gave where just examples.
Code:
HorizSync 30.0 - 55.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 120.0
#Option "DPMS" "true"
HorizSync 30.0
VertRefresh 50.0
The blue lines contain the correct values (according to above link), the red lines can be removed.
How do you set it 'back' to 800x600? Using some graphical tool? It's possible that X uses the highest resolution by default regardless of the sequence in the modelines (I'm not sure).

Stuck with 640x480
Using Debian, all fine, but unable to change above using screen res. preferences (no options there). Old monitor, tried but failed to get info- should I stop at this point?? Xorg.conf has all the options for screen sizes under "modes" so no clue there- started to look at GDM but I'm wallowing. Any suggestions please please?

Which driver in device section? vesa will (only) go to 1024x768, vga even lower.
If your monitor refresh rates are set correctly in the monitor section in xorg.conf, you can add Option "UseEdidFreqs" "False" to the device section. If that does not help, add Option "UseEdid" "False" to the device section.
Please post make and model for both the videocard and the monitor if you don't come right.
