Display problems with Nvidia drivers on Debian (XFree86 4.3.0.1) with GeForce 4MX 440

Hello all,

I ve had several problems with the nvidia drivers, that are now solved thanks to those forums :)
The last (but not least) problem i have is the next one : If I use nvidia driver in XF86Config-4 instead of open-source nv driver (which works fine but don t support GLX extensions, I dunno why ...), the nvidia module loads, XFree86 starts, the nvidia logo shows up ... and then the login window doesn t appear at all ... but the mouse pointer changes when it goes upon the (invisible) text fields ("Username" and "Password") ...
I try to login (even if I couldn t see what i m typing) and only the graphical objects that are animated show up ... Just like the front buffer is never flushed ...
I ve got an Athlon XP 2600+, an Asus A7V8X-X MB, a GeForce 4 MX 440 with AGP 8x ... My linux OS is a Debian-based Kanotix, kernel version is 2.6.9.1 ... I ve done all the latest upgrades (apt-get upgrade), the kernel sources are installed, nvidia drivers are the latest (1.0.6629) ...

There are no errors in the XFree86 log file ... all seems normal ...

My "Section Device" in XF86Config-4 is :

Section "Device"
### Available Driver options are:-
# sw_cursor is needed for some ati and radeon cards
#Option "sw_cursor"
#Option "hw_cursor"
#Option "NoAccel"
#Option "ShowCache"
#Option "ShadowFB"
#Option "UseFBDev"
#Option "Rotate"
#Option "NvAgp" "1"
#Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"
#Option "Nologo"
Identifier "Card0"
# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
Driver "nv"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
# BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

I ve tried to enable all the options one by one but it does nothing ... except if I enable "sw_cursor" : the mouse pointer shows like the background : it's drawn everywhere it goes ...

I ve never heard about that problem on the forums I browsed ...
Please help ...

Thx in advance

Ok sorry I solved my problem ... I ve installed an earlier verson of the nvidia driver, and it works ... :)
But it s amazing, don t u think ... Normally, the more recent the driver is, the less bugs it has ? no ??

kermit 01-04-2005 06:00 AM

how did you did that lordnukem?

lordnukem 01-05-2005 05:46 AM

Uh ...

I ve just change the nvidia driver to an older version ...
If u want to know how to install another driver follow these steps :

- Download the driver u want on nvidia's website : http://www.nvidia.com

- Exit from X server (kill the process which is named XFree86, or choose "Console login" at the login screen)

- Switch to console login : Ctrl+Alt+F1

- Log as root

- Go to nvidia's drivers (the old one, if u already have an nvidia driver installed, and the new one) directory : $ cd <where_u_put_them>

- Check u have source code from your kernel installed (/usr/src/linux)

- To uninstall the old one, execute the old driver with parameter "--uninstall" : $ ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx-pkg1.run --uninstall (if it isn t executable, type chmod 755 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx-pkg1.run)

- Execute the driver installation file : $ ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx-pkg1.run (if it isn t executable type chmod 755 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx-pkg1.run)

First of all thanks lordnukem for the answer.

That's the standard way. After a month of something I gave up trying the `nvidia way` and switch to the `debian way`:

http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/debia...-dri-howto.txt

in which you create the .deb and use apt to install. Tha bad point is that I'm still a newbie and I still see all this very complicated... :(

Ok ... excuse me for being late at answering ...
At a moment, I thought I would use the open-source drivers for my card ...
But after many tries, I was forced to give up : I ve never managed to make glx work with these drivers :( ...
So I m afraid I can t help you ...
But if you just want to install a .deb package, type this command at prompt :
> dpkg -i your_package.deb
I hope that ll help you :)

Thanks for the tip lordnukem.

I was experiencing exactly the same problem and was stumped on how to fix it, as no error messages were being generated. Installing the 1.0-6111 nvidia drivers solved the problem and xwindows is now displaying correctly.
