Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Disable Bluetooth on Dell Latitude D600

This is the second Dell in a row I've had this problem with and it's driving me nuts. The WiFi and bluetooth cards are (as far as I can tell) inseperable and thus to use WiFi you have to enable the blueooth adapter. Fine, except the blueooth adapter (on two laptops now) constantly turns itself on and off when enabled.

The net result is that my log file looks like this:

kernel: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
kernel: usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 2
kernel: usbcore: registered new driver hci_usb
kernel: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
kernel: usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 3
kernel: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
kernel: usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 4
kernel: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5

... You get the idea.

Anyway, everytime this re-detection happens my computer becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. The net result is that my laptop is unusable if I enable my built-in WiFi antenna.

Does anyone know of a way to tell the kernel to just ignore the blueooth card?

I'm running the latest FC3 kernel which I gather includes USB drivers built in. I suppose I could rebuild the kernel with USB modules and just remove them when I want to use WiFi, but that sucks and would prevent me from using my USB mouse. Preventing the kernel from loading the bluetooth module or hci_usb modules does not help (in fact trying to remove hci_usb freezes the computer). So I've been using a PCMCIA WiFi card, but that big square antenna sticking out of my laptop makes me sad.

I believe there's an option in the BIOS where you can disable Bluetooth only.

Angry I have exactly the same problem...

I have exactly the same problem with bluetooth. (1450 MiniCard on BCM4309)
I could not find any option in the BIOS to disable bluetooth and keep the wifi switched on.
BIOS says that bluetooth is not installed.

Every few seconds there appears an unknown (unidentified) USB device and it disappears. Sometimes the bluetooth light turns on but it goes down after less than a second.
In dmesg I can see tons of lines like this:
...
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 79
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 80
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 80
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 81
usb 1-2: device not accepting address 81, error -71
hub 3-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 2. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 83
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 83
...

I observe the same problem in WindowsXP. Windows also advises to check USB cabling :-)

I suspect that it may be some kind of hardware problem.
What do you think?

Regards
juras
