dri requires a kernal module. try "modprobe i915" if it work there will be no feedback. type lsmod and it should list i915 and drm. if this works add i915 to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
if it says module not found, enable AGP AGP_INTEL DRM and DRM_I915 in kernel config all found under device drivers/character devices, i915 is visable after selecting "Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G"
once the module loads/complied it (dmesg to check) add
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
to xorg.conf for non root access
It should work then.
If you have issues with the i915 driver try i830 newer xorg shouldn't have any problems
If compiling a kernel is beyond you, look for a x11-drm slackpack. cannie help you there, i do gentoo
